Amie and Jolie Sikes talk new book, DIY projects and junk

Junk Gypsy sisters who live in RoundTop coming to BookPeople.

Sisters Amie and Jolie Sikes are on the road again. Last week, the HGTV and Great American Country TV stars were headed from their home in Round Top to Dallas. In Round Top, they own their Junk Gypsy store and the Wander Inn. In Dallas, they would be doing press on morning TV news shows to pitch their new book, “Junk Gypsy: Designing a Life at the Crossroads of Wonder & Wander.”

The book, which tells their story — “a story that junk built,” they tell us in the promotional video for the book — is part biography,

part coffee table book, part do-ityourself project manual.

The Junk Gypsies have made their business a family affair. Last week, the sisters, their children and their parents were all taking this road trip in a van once owned by the band of Willie Nelson’s daughter, Paula Nelson.

Being a Junk Gypsy is living a life of traveling the roads of Texas and beyond in search of junk

along roadsides and in antique stores and flea markets to give it new life. No matter where the road takes them, they always come home to their Texas roots.

On this day, they were doing the very Texas thing: stopping at Whataburger for No. 7s (a Whataburger Jr.) with cheese and no onions and a Dr Pepper for Amie Sikes, an iced tea for Jolie Sikes. They rarely fight, but if there was one thing they plan to fight about as “Golden Girls” it’s which is better: Dr Pepper or iced tea.
