Evans, Cox set records in pool
Joanna Evans and Madisyn Cox each set Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship records to highlight a big day for the Longhorns at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Thursday.
Evans finished the 500-yard freestyle in 4:36.97, breaking a 25-year-old school record held by Erika Hansen. Evans clocked in at 4:42.07 to win the preliminary round before breaking the Big 12 record in the final.
Lauren Case, a UT freshman, took second place in the final with a time of 4:40.09. Quinn Carrozza rounded out a 1-2-3 finish for Texas with a time of 4:45.97.
Cox improved her 200 individual medley school and Big 12 records by finishing in 1:52.82, an improvement of 0.01.
Clark Smith took the men’s 500 freestyle event final in a time of 4:11.11 to set the meet record. Smith was the best qualifier in the event, finishing in 4:16.31.
Joseph Schooling tied a meet record as he finished the 50-yard freestyle in 19.18 seconds in the preliminary round of the event.
The Texas junior, an Olympian for Singapore, edged out teammate Jack Conger by 0.02 to tie the meet record.
Madisyn Cox qualified in the top spot in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.71, nearly four seconds better than teammate Nora McCullagh.
John Shebat finished the 200 IM prelim in 1:43.35, the 10th-best time in the nation and the seventh-fastest for a Longhorn in school history.
Rebecca Millard finished her 50 freestyle preliminary in 22.07, followed by Claire Adams in 22.46.
Alison Gibson, Meghan O’Brien and Sofia Rauzi finished the one-meter preliminaries in the top three spots. Gibson scored 331.25 points, while O’Brien recorded 292.75. Rauzi earned 283.10 points.
