Texas State’s baseball season started last Friday, and the Bobcats have already played five home games, splitting a fourgame series with Purdue and then falling to Baylor on Wednesday.

Pitching has been an early issue. The Bobcats have used five starters so far, but only one has made it past the third inning.

Texas State fell 9-3 to Purdue last Friday and then 12-8 in the first game of their doubleheader Saturday. In the second Saturday game, the Bobcats trailed 10-5 before rallying for eight runs in the final two innings to win, highlighted by Derek Scheible’s walk-off home run. Texas State then beat the Boilermakers 14-5 on Sunday.

Undefeated Baylor shut out the Bobcats on Wednesday; Texas State used eight pitchers and stranded 12 base runners.

The Bobcats (2-3) are on the road this weekend, playing a threegame series at Oklahoma State.

Sun Belt indoor title: Texas State’s women’s track and field team won the conference indoor meet in record-setting fashion, scoring a school-record 166 team points. The men finished second.

“We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and what we were able to accomplish over the last few days,” track and field director Jody Stewart said in a statement. “Our women did a great job of stepping up and meeting the challenge. The men performed equally well, keeping in mind we graduated 10 last year. We’re young and will continue to get better.”

Softball moves to 6-2: After starting the season 4-1 in the Centurylink Classic in San Marcos, the softball team traveled to Las Vegas last weekend, going 2-1 in the Demarni Desert Classic.

The Bobcats split the first two games, losing to No. 25 BYU 5-3 and beating Hawaii 6-1. Originally slated for five games, three contests were canceled due to weather, against Idaho State and Weber State on Saturday and against Utah State on Sunday morning. A game was added to the Bobcats’ schedule for Sunday night, with Texas State beating Colorado State 3-0.

Back on the road this weekend, the Bobcats will play four games at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio, starting with New Mexico (4-6) Friday.

Both basketball teams fall: The men’s and women’s basketball teams are coming off losses; the men dropped two straight on the road, to Georgia Southern (17-11, 10-5) 70-67 on Saturday and then Georgia State (1710, 10-5) 67-51 on Monday. Now in sixth place in the Sun Belt standings, the men will look to bounce back against Troy (16-12, 8-10) at home Saturday.

The women’s team was on a four-game winning streak before losing to Georgia Southern 71-69 last Saturday. Sitting at fifth in the conference standings, it hosted South Alabama (9-16, 4-10) on Thursday night.
