East Austin shooting city’s third homicide in six days

Austin police are investigating the city’s third homicide in less than a week after a man was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in an East Austin neighborhood.

Officers responded around 12:45 p.m. in the 6400 block of Springdale Road, near the intersection with Manor Road, to reports of a shooting in the area. They found a man near the RARE Apartments complex who had been shot, police Sgt. David Daniels said.

Daniels said witnesses told police that the shooting happened during an altercation involving a group of people.

The victim, who hadn’t been identified but was described by police as a man in his 20s, was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he later died.

Although gang investigators were assisting homicide detectives with the case, police couldn’t confirm whether the incident was gang-related, Daniels said.

Police haven’t made any arrests in the case, but Daniels said police don’t believe the shooter poses any larger threat to the public.

“We are interviewing witnesses and trying to confirm (details) to hopefully resolve this situation as quickly as possible,” Daniels said.

The deadly shooting resulted in the city’s third homicide since last weekend, when two other men died as a result of violence.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Friday, police responded to a bus stop at the southeast corner of East Seventh and Comal streets where 51-year-old Glen Raymond Bur-

ford had fallen nearby.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics, who also arrived and tried to resuscitate him, told the officers Burford “had sustained trauma to the body,” police said.

Burford was taken to UMC Brackenridge, where he later died. Detectives later learned that he lived close to the bus stop and had walked there after being attacked.

Two nights later, Austin police responded around 6:45 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the 900 block of Bird Creek Drive in North Austin and found Jose Pedro Dominguez-Campos with “obvious trauma to his body.” He was taken to UMC Brackenridge, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Police accused 34-year-old Jose Medel Martinez-Lopez of shooting Dominguez-Campos and charged him with murder on Monday.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Martinez-Lopez’s wife told police the two men and their families lived together on Bird Creek Drive, but the men hadn’t been getting along. They were arguing Sunday about moving a vehicle out of the driveway when Martinez-Lopez pulled a gun and shot Dominguez-Campos multiple times, she told police.

At press time Wednesday, police were still searching for Martinez-Lopez, who authorities say should be considered armed and dangerous.
