Track and field: The Texas track and field team took several wins on its way to finishing at the top of the standings at the Longhorn Invitational at Myers Stadium on Saturday.

The men won with 177 points, over 78 points ahead of Michigan, while the women won with 141 points. The women’s team edged Minnesota by seven points.

The men’s competition was highlighted by wins in the discus, high jump, 1,500 meters, 400 relay, 400 meters and 200 meters. The men also took second in the triple jump, 110-meter hurdles and the 800 meters.

Aldrich Bailey Jr. completed a sweep of the 200 and 400 , winning both races comfortably. He finished the 400 in 46.19 and the 200 in a wind-aided 19.99.

Brian Peters threw the discus 185 feet, 4 inches for the win and the third-best throw in the Big 12 this season. It was his second home meet win in a row.

Spencer McCloud won the men’s high jump with a distance of 7-¼, which tied a personal record.

Charles Mills’ time of 3:56.57 was good enough for first place and maximum points in the 1,500.

Obrien Wasome, Bailey, Carlton Anumnu and Terry Brown Jr. teamed up to win the 400 relay with a time of 39.64.

On the women’s side, Elena Bruckner, Destiny Collins and Ariel Jones all came away with victories in their individual events.

“He was really good,” Houston manager A.J. Hinch. “He was pretty good last time too but just his command and control of himself, of his pitches, of his fastball, his change-up — he did everything right. He was pretty locked in.”

The Astros finished April 16-9, marking the third time in franchise history and first time since 2006 when they were 16-8, the club has won at least 16 games in the month.

“It is satisfying for sure, but it’s only April,” Keuchel said. “We have a long ways to go.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. We will take that.”

After Trevor Plouffe doubled with one out in the first, Keuchel retired 10 straight and 13 of the next 14 batters he faced.

“He’s got a good sinker, good cutter, good slider, good change-up — he’s got four pitches, and you just try to grind on him a little bit and stay close to him,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said of Keuchel. “Hopefully you can get him out of the game.”

Ken Giles earned his sixth save after getting Yonder Alonso to fly out with the bases loaded.

Gonzalez hit his home run off the right-field foul pole in eighth.
