On West Campus, another stabbing, and a body found,
After a fatal stabbing attack on the University of Texas campus Monday afternoon, Austin police responded to two other unrelated incidents that occurred on West Campus about a half-mile away that same day: a sec
ond stabbing and the discovery of a deceased man in his 20s in an apartment.
“We see no link between those (stabbings),” Austin police interim Chief Brian Manley said Tuesday. Addi
tionally, police do not believe the death of the man found at the apartment was a homicide.
The multiple stabbings near Gregory Gym was the first major incident to happen Monday and resulted in the arrest of 21-year-old UT student Kendrex J. White. Police first got the call at 1:46 p.m.
Then, around 3 p.m. Monday, an unidentified man stabbed a male student in the leg on Nueces Street near 26th Street, the victim later told police. Officers are looking for the person who stabbed him. Anyone who knows who this per- son is should call the Austin police homicide tip line at 512-974-5092.
The victim said he was walking when he saw a man aggressively pointing a knife at a woman, Manley said. He charged at the man with the knife and brought him to the ground. They strug-
gled, and the victim didn’t realize until the man with the knife ran away that he had been stabbed in the leg. The victim went home
and asked his roommates to take him to the hospital. Hospital officials notified Austin police at 4:33 p.m., Manley said.
The American-Statesman had contacted Austin police about reports of the incident on Monday afternoon. Around 4:25 p.m., Austin police — citing University of Texas police — said rumors of a stabbing in West Campus were unfounded. Then, again, at 5:21 p.m., the Aus
tin police Twitter account reported that there were “lots of rumors swirling around. Unless you hear from an official source, there are no further threats on or off (the UT campus) at this time.”
It wasn’t until 9:36 p.m. that police confirmed the stabbing, asking for the public’s help to find the attacker. Manley said that delay “was far too long.”
“One of the things we’ve learned from this and we’ll ensure moving forward is we’ll put out a more timely notification . ... There was a lot of misinformation being
put out on social media, but we need to be the ones putting out the accurate information,” Manley said.
Then, at 8:15 p.m., medics were called to an apartment on Nueces Street, one block north of where the stabbing occurred, and found a man dead inside the apartment. He was pronounced dead by 8:30 p.m., Austin-Travis County EMS officials said.
“There is nothing at all that we believe is suspicious about this death at this time,” Manley said.
