Yankees put Bird (ankle) on DL

Slumping first baseman Greg Bird was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday by the New York Yankees because of a bruised right ankle.

Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury also was out of the lineup Tuesday night against the Blue Jays with an injury to his left elbow. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said an MRI revealed a bruised nerve, and the team will wait a couple of days before making a decision about whether Ellsbury needs to go on the DL.

Bird has been playing with a sore ankle since fouling a ball off his foot during one of the final games of spring training. He is hitting .100 with one home run and three RBIs in 60 at-bats.

Ellsbury got hurt when he ran face-first into the padded wall to make a catch Monday night.

Tigers: First baseman Miguel Cabrera (right groin strain) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and first baseman/catcher John Hicks was optioned to TripleA Toledo.

Rays: Left fielder Colby Rasmus was activated from the DL following his recovery from hip surgery, and outfielder Shane Peterson was designated for assignment. Rasmus has at least 15 homers in each of the past five seasons. He underwent surgery in October, and the Rays signed him to a $5 million, one-year contract in January.

Rangers: A.J. Griffin is expected to come off the disabled list to start on Thursday after recovering from gout in his left ankle. Yu Darvish was originally scheduled to start Thursday, but the Rangers plan to push his start back to Friday to give him an extra day of rest after throwing 116 and 125 pitches in his last two starts.

Nationals: Joe Ross was sent to Triple-A to Syracuse after the right-hander struggled in three straight starts. Right-hander A.J. Cole was recalled from Triple-A.

Blue Jays: Ryan Goins hit the first two-run sacrifice fly in the team’s 40-year history in Monday night’s win over the Yankees.

The two runs scored when center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury caught Goins’ deep drive before running facefirst into the padded wall. It was the first such play in the majors since Wil Myers had two RBIs on a sacrifice fly for Tampa Bay against the Yankees in 2014.

Dodgers: Third baseman Justin Turner went 0 for 4 in Monday’s loss, ending the longest hitting streak in the majors at 16 games
