Jayhawks QB transfers to Boise State
Montell Cozart, a one-time starting quarterback for the Kansas Jayhawks, will spend his final season of eligibility at Boise State.
The Jayhawks, who are trying to claw their way out of the Big 12 basement, actually have a surplus of quarterbacks.
Cozart started seven games for Kansas last season but lost the job to Ryan Willis. Willis has transferred to Virginia Tech.
With new offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, Kansas used the spring to try to resolve its quarterback competition between Carter Stanley and Peyton Bender.
Stanley directed the Jayhawks’ victory over Texas last season. Bender originally was at Washington State before transferring to a junior college and then signing with Kansas.
Houston gets Aggies transfer: Texas A&M defensive tackle Reggie Chevis is transferring to Houston for his senior year.
He made the announcement on his Instagram account, saying he would graduate this month and then join the Cougars. Chevis grew up in Houston and played at Sharpstown High School. He was a four-star prospect when he signed in 2013 as part of coach Kevin Sumlin’s first full recruiting class.
Chevis didn’t see much action for the Aggies until last season, when he played in 11 games and totaled 25 tackles. His most significant play was a forced fumble against Auburn.
After spring practice, Chevis appeared to be third string on the depth chart.
He’ll have one season of eligibility with the Cougars.
K-State loses receiver: Corey Sutton, a promising young receiver, is transferring from Kansas State.
He announced his decision on social media this week but gave no clue as to where he might go.
Sutton, who enrolled in January 2016, was listed at second team on the depth chart after spring practice.
As a freshman, he played in 11 games and made four catches for 54 yards.
He was a three-star recruit coming out of high school.
Receiver is a position of strength for the Wildcats, who will be among the favorites to push defending champion Oklahoma for the Big 12 title.
Ex-Baylor staffers find jobs: Jeff Lebby and Randy Clements, two longtime assistants for former Baylor coach Art Briles, have landed new jobs.
Both will coach at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. The team is in its fourth year in the NAIA after competing in the National Christian College Athletic Association.
Lebby had been the Bears’ passing game coordinator. He worked at Baylor for nine seasons. Previously, he had played at Oklahoma and served there as a graduate assistant.
Clements is a longtime associate of Briles. They had worked together since the two were at Stephenville High School. Clements was the offensive line coach and coordinated Baylor’s running game.
“I am pleased to have Jeff Lebby and Randy Clements join the Fire football family as a part of my coaching staff,” Southeastern coach Keith Barefield said in a statement. “They both bring years of successful football experience, at various levels, to our young program and will contribute greatly to our continued success.”
All of Briles’ assistants remained on staff last fall under interim coach Jim Grobe. However, none was retained by Matt Rhule when he was hired in December.
None of Briles’ assistants was named in the independent review that determined the Baylor football program thought itself above the law when dealing with allegations of sexual assault.
All but three of the assistants have found other coaching employment.
Briles, who was fired after the investigation, reached a substantial settlement from Baylor and hasn’t returned to coaching.
McMurry pair indicted in slaying: Two players from McMurry, an NCAA Division III school in Abilene, have been indicted on capital murder charges in the January killing of a man in Fort Worth.
A Tarrant County grand jury indicted 20-year-old Dontrell Dock of Conroe and 18-year-old Brodrick Ross of Bryan on April 13 in the shooting death of 29-yearold Chris-Dion Russell.
The indictments said Dock and Ross killed Russell while robbing him at his apartment. The grand jury declined to indict 21-year-old Ryan McBeth of Fort Worth, who also had been arrested.
The three played in 2016 and were enrolled when arrested in January. School officials didn’t respond to a request to update their enrollment status.
