39th Granger Lakefest and Homecoming Car Show slated for May 13

- By David Wilfong

The Granger Lakefest and Homecoming BBQ Cook-off and Car Show is slated for its 39th appearance in the small community northeast of Georgetown on May 13. The car show runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

At 10 a.m. there is a lineup at 201 W. Davilla St. in Granger for a parade that starts at 10:30 a.m. All cars are welcome to participate, but convertibles are especially in demand. From there, registration runs from 11:30 a.m. until 1: 30 p.m. with Top 20 awards being given out at 3 p.m.

“We had 77 cars at the last year’s event, but we also had to share that event with Georgetown’s car show and Taylor had a car show, so a couple of cities that are near to us shared the same date,” said organizer Mark Harwell. “This year we don’t share the same date so we’re hoping for a bigger turnout. Maybe 100 cars, that would be nice.”

Harwell said that muscle cars and trucks are well represented at this show, along with a good collection of classics. The car show is open to all classes, and participants come in from as far north as Waco and Austin to the south.

In addition to the car show, there is a BBQ cook-off which usually draws around 35 contestants, so the food situation should be well taken care of.

“One could sample all the BBQ they would want,” Harwell said. “They could even be a judge in the BBQ cook-off if they wanted to.”

There is also a section for children’s entertainment, and vendors will be on hand selling anything from food to arts and crafts. The parade features not only cars, but area school groups, floats from the surrounding community and military participants as well. The event is sponsored by the Granger Area Chamber of Commerce.
