Arrest made in March 10 East Austin slaying
Roommate charged with first-degree murder in stabbing.
Austin police on Friday arrested the man they say stabbed and killed his East Austin roommate in March — and then hovered around the crime scene as officers investigated.
Police say they identified Charles Reedy, 63, thanks in part to a trail of blood that ran the halfblock from his apartment to the bus stop where a Capital Metro driver discovered the almost lifeless body of Reedy’s roommate, 51-year-old Glen Burford. Burford died that night at University Medical Center Brackenridge.
That stabbing on March 10 was the first in a spate of six homicides over seven days, leaving Austin residents on edge as the city was flooded by tourists visiting for the South by Southwest festivals.
Reedy is being held in the Travis County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder. The district clerk’s office said no bail had been set as of Monday evening.
Five hours after the stabbing, police obtained a search warrant for the East Seventh Street apartment the two men shared. According to Reedy’s arrest affidavit, it was dotted with evidence: Officers found blood on the front door’s screen, its door jamb and the door jamb of Burford’s bedroom. They also found a knife that appeared to match the size of the one used to stab Burford, and it was sent for DNA testing, investigators said.
Police did not lay out a motive, but they did state in the affidavit that another roommate claimed Reedy had previously threatened
