Schubert tied for 4th after 1st round of NCAA regional
UT women’s golf team in 8th place overall at Lubbock.
Sophia Schubert shot a 71 to finish at 1-under par for the opening round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional on Monday.
The junior made threestraight pars before making her birdie putt on the par-3 No. 6 hole. She finished the front nine at even par.
On the back nine, she birdied No. 10 and No. 12, but then had her third bogey of the day before closing the round at 1-under.
Schubert enters today’s second round tied for fourth overall behind leader Lila Vu of UCLA, who finished at 4-under par, Oregon’s Cathleen Santoso (-3) and Pimnipa Panthong (-2) of Kent State.
The 22nd-ranked Texas women’s golf team is tied for eighth place with Furman after a collective score of 300 (12-over par). Arizona State is the team leader after a firstday 293.
Oregon is second with a score of 294 while Texas Tech and UCLA are tied for third after a first-round 296.
Haley Mills and Julia Beck are tied for 36th place after rounds of 76, followed by Emilee Hoffman, who shot a 77 and is tied for 55th place. Greta Isabella Voelker shot a 81, putting her at 80th place overall.
The second round will begin at 8 a.m. today at Rawls Golf Course.
Men’s golf: Junior Doug Ghim was named Big 12 player of the year and coach John Fields was selected as coach of the year for the fifth straight season as the conference announced its postseason awards Monday.
Ghim becomes the third straight Longhorn to earn player of the year honors and seventh total, joining Beau Hossler, Brandon Stone, Jordan Spieth, Dylan Frittelli, Jason Hartwick and David Gossett.
This is Fields’ 12th conference coach of the year honor and his eighth Big 12 honor. He led Texas this season to the program’s fifth straight Big 12 title.
Ghim and junior Scottie Scheffler were Texas’ representatives on the All-Big 12 team. It’s Ghim’s third straight selection and Scheffler’s second.
The 12th-ranked men’s golf team will begin the postseason Monday at UT Golf Club.
