Dell Diamond to host Liga MX clubs

Two of Mexico’s top soccer teams will meet at Dell Diamond this summer in a preseason match as Liga MX returns to Central Texas.

Club Santos Laguna and Deportivo Toluca F.C. will face off at Dell Diamond July 12 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting during Major League Baseball’s All-Star break marks the third consecutive year that Dell Diamond has hosted a preseason contest between Liga MX squads.

Chivas of Guadalajara and Pachuca played in 2015, and the experiment was a rousing success. The crowd of 11,181 fans is believed to be the second-largest ever in the Austin area for soccer. Last season, more than 7,000 fans watched Club León play Club Morelia.

Next month’s match should draw similar numbers. Toluca and Santos Laguna finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 2017 league standings, and both squads boast a large fan base and legacy of success. Toluca is a 10-time Liga MX champion and features one of Mexico’s top stars, Argentinian native Rubens Sambueza. Five-time Liga MX champion Santos Laguna most recently won a league title in 2015 and features high-scoring winger Jonathan Rodriguez, a Uruguayan national.

Tickets start at $29 and go on sale Wednesday. Kids 10 and under get in free with a paying adult. Tickets are also on sale at La Michoacana Meat Market locations in Central Texas.
