Texas State outfielder Teddy Hoffman was drafted in the 15th round Wednesday by the Detroit Tigers.

He was the only Bobcat selected and is the 59th Texas State player selected in the MLB draft, including 20 who have played for current coach Ty Harrington.

Hoffman led the Bobcats with career-high numbers and was near the top of the Sun Belt Conference in a handful of statistical categories. He led the conference in total bases (153) and was tied for second in RBIs (56), home runs (16) and runs (52). He also had the fourth highest batting average in the conference at .349 and finished with 14 stolen bases, which ranked eighth.

He was the only Texas State player to start all 59 games this past season and his 16 home runs are the sixth most in the program’s history.

With a 4.0 GPA, Hoffman was also the only Sun Belt player named to CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Baseball first team.

Hoffman, a junior, still has one year of eligibility left. He has until July 15 to make a decision on whether to sign with the Tigers or finish his career at Texas State.

Men’s basketball receives transfer: Cal Poly guard Jaylen Shead transferred to Texas State after spending the past two seasons with the Mustangs.

A three-year at starter at Connally High School in Pflugerville, Shead said Texas State coach Danny Kaspar originally recruited him out of high school so he was already familiar with the program.

“I saw what the basketball team did last year,” Shead said. “I went to a few a games while I was home and it seemed like a great opportunity. I gave coach Kaspar a call and I liked what he said.

“I needed a place where I could enjoy school and also work toward my goals in basketball. I think I found that in Texas State.”

A 6-foot-1 guard, Shead averaged 8.4 points and shot 43.1 percent from the field in nine starts last season.

“I think of myself as a creator trying to do my best to get my teammates in the best position to score,” Shead said. “I also enjoy defense, something a lot of people don’t take the time to work on, but I want to be the best on-ball defender in the conference.”

Shead will have to sit out next season because of NCAA transfer eligibility rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

JUCO punter joins Bobcats: Pima Community College (Arizona) punter Jacob Meeker-Hackett will transfer to Texas State as a preferred walk-on this summer. He will be eligible to play this fall. Meeker-Hackett played one season at Pima and will have three seasons of eligibility at Texas State. The Bobcats are still looking for a replacement at punter after last year’s starter Lumi Kaba graduated.
