Ex-Lake Travis stars picked in MLB draft

A pair of Lake Travis grad- uates were among four Central Texans selected Wednesday in the MLB draft.

Connor Mayes, a junior pitcher for the University of Texas, was picked by the Kansas City Royals in the 24th round with the 720th overall pick. The 6-foot-2, 205pound right-hander threw 27 innings this past season with 22 strikeouts with a 6.00 ERA for the Longhorns. Mayes lettered three years at Lake Travis and earned all-state honors as a senior after going 11-0 with a 0.69 ERA and 90 strikeouts.

Chris Roller, a prep teammate of Mayes, was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 30th round with the 910th overall pick. The center fielder from Austin had a .414 batting average with 26 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 71 RBIs and 32 stolen bases for McLennan Community College this spring. He has signed to play at the University of Texas-San Antonio next season.

Brandon Boone, a Georgetown graduate and a senior pitcher at St. Edward’s University, was selected in the 39th round by the Miami Marlins. A transfer from West Virginia, Boone pitched 54⅔ innings for St. Edward’s this past season and was 6-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 50 strikeouts. In high school, he also earned all-state honors as a defensive back at Georgetown.

The Marlins also selected Hendrickso­n graduate Karl Craigie, who went in the 34th round. Craigie just completed his senior year at UTSA. The 6-1, 215-pound left-hander was 7-1 with a 2.66 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 47⅓ innings this spring for the Roadrunner­s.
