Horns compete at USATF events

Several current and former Texas Longhorns kicked off action Thursday at the USATF Championsh­ips and the Jamai- can National Championsh­ips.

The USATF Junior Championsh­ips also began, highlighte­d by UT freshman George Patrick leading the decathlon after five events.

Patrick dominated the com- petition as he scored a personal-best 4,113 points. He set personal records in four of Thursday’s events, win- ning the 100 meters in 10.75 seconds and the long jump at 24 feet, 5 inches. He finished in third in both the shot put and the high jump.

Two current Longhorns and a former one competed in the decathlon at the senior level to try to earn spots in the IAAF World Championsh­ips.

Former Longhorn Trey Hardee sat in second place through five events after scor- ing 4,306 points. He finished second in the 100 meters (10.57) and the shot put (48-11).

The top scoring current Longhorn in the decathlon Thursday was Steele Wasik, who was eighth with 3,983 points at the halfway mark. He took third in the high jump at 6-6.

Texas ex Morolake Akinosun qualified second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.98.

Courtney Okolo, another former Longhorn, also qualified second in her event. The 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the 1,600 relay finished the 400 meters in 50.97 to advance to the semifinals.

Zola Golden, a sophomore at Texas, qualified 14th with a time of 52.02, a personal best.

At the Jamaican National Championsh­ips, Senoj-Jay Givans qualified for the 100meter semifinals in seventh with a time of 10.27.
