St. David’s Foundation aids indigent health

The charitable arm of the St. David’s hospital network announced Wednesday it was donating $33.2 million to Austin-area nonprofits that provide health care services for the poor.

The grants account for almost half of the St. David’s Foundation’s roughly $70 million in annual donations, which are funded by the income it earns from its co-ownership of the St. David’s hospital system. The money goes to support health care and healthy living programs around the metro area.

“That’s a lot of zeros and we feel so great about it,” foundation board chairman Peter Pincoffs said about the multimillion-dollar donations. “This is the largest grant cycle of contributions we’ve made in the history of the foundation.”

The announcement — replete with breakfast, applause and a giant prop check — is one of two the charity makes every year, detailing the recipients of its largess.

Roughly a third of the money, $12.4 million, will go to support “safety net” clinics, where low-income individuals can receive basic health care services, including check-ups, prenatal care and help treating chronic illnesses such as diabetes.

Two providers — People’s Community Clinic and the Lone Star Circle of Care — combined to receive the bulk, $9.4 million, of that money.

Nonprofits that provide pediatric care, mental health services and dental care combined to receive the remaining roughly $21 million, the charity said in a statement.
