Knebel gets first All-Star selection

Former UT reliever has 1.13 ERA with 13 saves this season.

Once identified as a Longhorn, Eagle and Bear, Corey Knebel is now an all-star for the first time. He’ll also soon be a father. Knebel, who played high school baseball for Georgetown and Bastrop high schools, was selected Sunday to play for the National League in next Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game in Miami. A closer for Milwaukee, Knebel is 0-1 with a 1.13 ERA and 13 saves this season. The former Texas Longhorn, who is in his fourth majorleagu­e season, set a seasonstar­ting record last month for consecutiv­e relief appearance­s with at least one strikeout. The MLBbest streak currently stands at 40 games.

Knebel spent three seasons at Texas and his 37 saves rank behind only Huston Street in the UT record book.

Knebel gives Texas an all-star representa­tive for a second straight season. The San Francisco Giants’ Brandon Belt was a reserve infielder in 2016.

The all-star selection wrapped up a newsworthy Sunday for Knebel, who did not pitch in the Brewers’ 10-3 loss to Miami.

Before the game, he found out that he and his wife, Danielle, would be having a girl. The Knebels’ first child is due in November. 1. In his teams’ final two games, he recorded five intercepti­ons and returned one for a touchdown.
