Manfred offers to meet umpires

Wristbands were worn after ‘abusive player behavior.’

-

Major League Baseball umpires ended their protest of what they called “abusive player behavior” after Commissioner Rob Manfred offered to meet with their union’s governing board.

Most umpires wore white wristbands during Saturday’s games after Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler was fined but not suspended for his recent tirade against Angel Hernandez. Kinsler said Tuesday that Hernandez was a bad umpire and “just needs to go away.”

The World Umpires Association announced Sunday in a series of tweets that Manfred proposed a meeting to discuss its concerns, and said umps decided to remove the wristbands to demonstrate their good faith pending the meeting.

There was no immediate comment from Major League Baseball.

Red Sox: The team honored former second baseman Jerry Remy for his 30 years in the broadcast booth. Remy was recently diagnosed with cancer for a fifth time and is scheduled to begin chemotherapy this week. He was presented with an oversized glove by current second baseman Dustin Pedroia and received other gifts from the team. He thanked his family and singled out some of the broadcasters and crew with whom he worked. Remy played 10 seasons in the majors, the last seven in Boston.

Rangers: Third baseman Joey Gallo (bloody nose, swollen upper lip) and righthander Matt Bush (bruised right knee) left in the eighth inning Sunday after colliding while chasing a popup. Both were being evaluated under MLB’s concussion protocol.

Cubs: Catcher Rene Rivera joined the team and got the start for the series finale against Toronto. Rookie Victor Caratini was optioned to Triple-A to make room. Chicago also activated reliever Koji Uehara from the 10-day disabled list and optioned left-hander Rob Zastryzny to its top farm club. Uehara had been sidelined by a neck injury. Rivera was acquired Saturday on a waiver claim from the Mets.

Mets: Right-hander Matt Harvey will start today in Double-A in his recovery from a stress injury to the scapula bone in his right shoulder. He has had made two starts in Single-A, allowing two hits, one run, a walk and three strikeouts over four innings. Harvey was 4-3 with a 5.25 ERA in 13 starts before his setback. New York also acquired right-hander Jacob Rhame as the player to be named in the deal that sent outfielder Curtis Granderson to the Dodgers on Friday night. Rhame was selected by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2013 draft and was 0-2 with two saves, 55 strikeouts and a 4.31 ERA in 41 games in Triple-A. He’ll report to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Mariners: After missing two games with a stomach virus, third baseman Kyle Seager is “not 100 percent yet,” according to manager Scott Servais, and was given the day off. Seattle also said right-hander David Phelps (right elbow impingement) will throw a simulated game before it’s decided when he’ll come off the disabled list.

Rays: Rookie right-hander Jake Faria went on the 10-day DL (retroactive to Aug. 17) with a left abdominal strain.
