Bugs and more converge on San Antonio for the annual VW Spillout

Volkswagen has been a favorite among import brands for decades, with the “Bug” being an iconic and revered model.

It has been found on the road in versions that hearken to luxury and style, and it has been souped up as a street rod as well. South of the border, the Bug can still be seen as a regular fixture zipping about the cities and highways.

On the weekend of Sept. 2-3 at Traders Village in San Antonio (9330 SW Loop 410), the 6th annual VW Spillout will take place, bringing in a fleet of VWs in every iteration from not only across the U.S., but a caravan of attendees will be arriving from Mexico, as well. The event is hosted by the Oil Drippers of San Antonio, which is part of a larger club with seven chapters across Texas and Mexico.

The Bugs and more will actually begin arriving for a Friday night “Early Arrivers” party, an informal BBQ gathering from 7-10 p.m. for those coming in from great distances. On Saturday, the VWs will be on display for a “show and shine” all day before going out on the road at 5:30 p.m.

The show is held on Sunday, with registration running from 8 a.m. until noon. Awards will be announced at 4 p.m. There will also be a “valve cover race” which takes place at 1 p.m.
