Even in horrific times, God’s grace is there when we are ready

-

I recently traveled out of town to a relative’s wedding. As I rode through downtown to the hotel, I marveled at the greenery, trees and nature in the center of the city.

When I reached the hotel, I paused to take in the lovely grounds and garden. The willow trees were dancing in the wind, the oak tree stood tall and yet, its limbs swayed in the distance. It was a reminder that every now and then, no matter what is happening around us, we need to pause and take in God’s miracles. It is through the everyday miracles that we can appreciate God’s grace.

Grace may be hard to imagine or understand when your family or friends are dealing with major life challenges. Yet, if you can focus on one positive aspect for which you can be grateful, your perspective will shift and the lens through which you view life is sharpened.

Grace is often referred to as unmerited favor regardless of our past transgressions. At some point, we have all fallen short of expectations or performance in life and despite our downfall, God’s grace gives us favor and the gift of eternal life.

God’s grace gives up power and strength when we need it. It helps us to move forward, even when we think we can’t do it on our own.

Whenever we experience pain, suffering, loss or a casualty, we must feel the emotion, walk through the pain and get on the other side. The longer we tarry, the harder it gets. In the meantime, it’s important to remember “God’s grace is sufficient, for his power is made perfect in your weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:8-9).

So, how do we keep going in the midst of difficulty, disappointment or chaos? It helps to step away from the situation, create the space to focus on just one thing you are grateful for, and then, let that one thought open the door to the many gifts available to you through God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8).

A friend recently experienced a debilitating stroke. I had to remind myself that the grace of God was present, even in that circumstance. It was a time to draw closed to God and to take my concerns about that situation and its needs to God. God promises to always be with us.

On the ride back to the airport, I noticed the trees standing tall against the strong winds. It reminded me that we must stand tall in the face of challenges. On the return flight I settled in for a short trip. When the pilot announced we were returning to the airport due to a mechanical problem, I paused in silence and quickly asked for God’s gift of grace for traveling favor.

Grace takes many forms and it is present wherever we are. We simply have to ask, believe and receive God’s grace.
