Jenkins gets what she deserves with deal to lead ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel
In what was more a matter of “when” than “if,” Warner Bros. and DC have wisely signed Patty Jenkins for the “Wonder Woman” sequel after lengthy negotiations, Variety first reported Monday.
Jenkins will direct, produce and co-write the sequel and become the highest-paid female filmmaker ever, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
DC’s cinematic universe was foundering creatively until Jenkins steered “Wonder Woman” to commercial and critical success this summer.
The film, starring Gal Gadot in the title role, is the year’s secondbiggest movie domestically ($410 million gross) and seventh-biggest film worldwide ($810 million), as well as 2017’s biggest original film (not a sequel or remake) the globe over. The release has also set the domestic and worldwide box office records for a movie solo-directed by a woman and a live-action film directed by a woman.
Critically, “Wonder Woman” has an average score of 76 on Metacritic.com and a 92 percent “fresh” rating on RottenTomatoes.com.
Jenkins had already been working on a sequel script with writer-executive Geoff Johns, who helps decide the direction of the DC Extended Universe. She has also a TNT series in the works with “Wonder Woman” star Chris Pine headlining.
Gadot was already signed for the sequel, which is due Dec. 13, 2019.
