Faces off the field

Sterling Galban, senior wide receiver, Burnet

- — RICK CANTU

What did you do to prepare for the season?

I trained with my position specialist, Rischad Whitfield (of Houston), to improve my game on the field. People call him the “Footwork King.” I also spent a lot of time in the weight room.

What are your expectations for your team this fall?

I expect us to have a pretty good season. I feel like we have the type of players to go deep into the playoffs.

What are your personal goals?

To make the all-state team and break the single-season school records held by Jordan Shipley (of 95 receptions for 1,920 yards).

What do you think of your school’s spirit?

Our school spirit is great. Everyone backs the football team on game days, and it’s just a great experience.

What do you like most about your high school?

Just knowing that everyone supports the football team and having a brotherhood-type locker room.

How do you motivate yourself to work out on days you don’t feel like it?

I just think of my goals and what I want to do and go attack the day.

If you could have dinner with any four people in the history of the world, whom would you invite?

Jerry Rice, Odell Beckham Jr., Antonio Brown and Adrian Peterson.

How did you pick this list?

I picked these guys because of the knowledge they could share with me about football, but also how they got there.

What do you enjoy the most about football?

I just love competing in the sport I love and making things happen with the ball in my hands. The natural high you get

you do something good is indescribable.

What are your college plans?

I had around a dozen Division I offers, but I announced on my birthday on Aug. 26 that I was going to play football at Texas Tech.

Where did you get your competitive streak from?

I think I really got my competitiveness from just competing with my brother (Chandler) in everything. Whether it was games on the trampoline or football inside the house, we were always wanting to win.

What’s your favorite football memory at Burnet?

Probably my first game I started as a sophomore. The game (against Marble Falls) lived up to all the hype around Texas high school football and we won. It was exciting to finally play in a varsity game that I dreamed about playing in as a little kid.

Tell me something about yourself that most people don’t know.

Most people don’t know how hard I work. During the offseason, I drive to Houston every Saturday to train, and I’m in the weight room every day before school at 6:30 a.m.

Do you have any pregame rituals?

I talk to God before every game. He is in control of my destiny and without him I wouldn’t be where I’m at.
