Video sought of fight that left Air Force vet dead
Investigators still have few answers for what started the incident.
Austin police are searching for people who might have filmed a fight on Sixth Street early Sunday that left a 33-year-old Air Force veteran dead.
Officers received reports of an unconscious man in the 200 block of East Sixth Street, near the Driskill Hotel, around 2 a.m.
When they arrived, they found Marques Johnson unresponsive in the street.
Authorities loaded Johnson into an ambulance and took him to the Dell Seton Medical Center, but he died from his injuries Monday.
Sgt. Tracy Gerrish said investigators still have few answers for what started the incident.
The department has a network of overhead cameras scattered throughout the bustling entertainment district where Johnson was found, but they only captured the end of the incident.
“We actually see our victim lying, basically, in the middle of Sixth Street, a crowd coming around him and then the officers showing up on the scene,” Gerrish said. “We do see some individuals who were upset, and we do believe most of those people were with this party.”
Police are not yet releasing the video they have because they want to show it to witnesses and see if they can identify anyone who might have been responsible.
Gerrish said some people have called to say they have video of the incident, but as investigators scour all the cameras that could have captured the fight, police are hoping more people with better video will come forward.
Until they do, police are still trying to piece together the events that led up to the attack.
Gerrish said investigators believe the Johnson and his wife had just left the Barcelona nightclub, 209 E. Sixth St., and were headed east when Johnson traded
