Cruz opposed sex toys as his duty demanded
Senator defended state ban on devices in prior role as solicitor general.
Among darts tossed at Sen. Ted Cruz after his Twitter account “liked” a sexual video clip was an allegation that Cruz has backed a ban on sex toys.
The New York Post tweeted: “This is the same senator who once supported a ban on sex toys.”
We’re unaware of Cruz, elected in 2012 and seeking re-election in 2018, calling for a ban on sex toys.
So what was the Post talking about?
The Post’s tweet linked to the newspaper’s news story, which said, without added detail: “Cruz, a Republican from Texas, is known for his strong religious convictions and family values stance — and once even supported a ban on sex toys.”
Cruz did not respond to our inquiry for this fact-check. But he objected when CNN’s Dana Bash asked him: “Do you appreciate the irony that you once defended a Texas law banning sales of sex toys?”
“No,” Cruz said. “That’s a good example, Dana, where the media runs with things that are just delegates.”
The resolution also specifies this would be done with hotel taxes, a portion of which the council recently diverted from Austin Convention Center and Visit Austin operations to make available instead for historic preservation efforts.
