Mass communication software maker AlertMedia has landed $8 million to launch a new wave of growth.

Founded in 2013, the Austin-based company lets customers deliver mass notifications by phone, text, social media and mobile apps to any type of device, from a smartphone to an iPad or PC.

Workers can also message their employers, allowing them to quickly share information in fast-changing situations, such as power outages or logistics.

Next Coast Ventures was the lead investor in the deal, which included investment from ATX Seed Ventures. AlertMedia has raised about $17 million to date from backers including Silverton Partners and Capital Factory.

“This funding allows us to continue expanding our product offering while growing our sales and customer success teams,” said Brian Cruver, CEO of AlertMedia.

AlertMedia has signed hundreds of customers in a range of industries including retail, energy, transportation, technology and professional services. Its client list ranges from small businesses to nonprofits such as the Salvation Army to corporations including Kellogg’s, DHL and Volkswagen.

“At a time when the news seems to be dominated by emergency after emergency, it’s becoming a necessity for corporations — of all sizes and across all industries — to have modern notification systems in place,” said Mike Smerklo, managing director of Next Coast Ventures. “We feel strongly that AlertMedia represents the future of emergency mass communication and has the right team in place to successfully scale this product.”

While many customers use the AlertMedia platform for emergency communication, it also is used for dayto-day business communication and operational activities such as scheduling and dispatching.

Last year, San Antonio-based grocery chain H-E-B began using AlertMedia to communicate with truckers and other workers.

Meanwhile, the Department of Family and Protective Services has deployed AlertMedia as a communication system for thousands of field workers who use it to communicate if they are in danger when meeting clients.

AlertMedia has 60 employees and plans to grow to 100 with the new funding.
