Historic moment for Lake Travis

The boys cross-country team at Lake Travis made school history this past weekend, when the Cavaliers posted a fourth-place finish at the Class 6A, Region IV meet and locked up a berth in the UIL state meet for the first time.

Led by Brady Grant’s seventh-place finish of 15 minutes, 57 seconds on the 5K course, Lake Travis qualified for the UIL championsh­ips behind Smithson Valley, San Antonio Brandeis and Del Rio. Westlake senior Matthew Kearney won the boys individual championsh­ip in 15:32.

The Vandegrift girls squad also qualified for the Class 6A state meet, placing fourth at the Region IV meet in Corpus Christi. Gabriela Bosquez of Hays finished sixth in 19:22 and will compete at state as an individual entrant.

At the 6A, Region II meet in Grand Prairie, Dereck Elkins of Stony Point was fifth in the boys race in 15:45 to advance to state.

At the 5A, Region IV meet, Dripping Springs finished second to qualify for state. Marble Falls’ Ambrie Lizcano was sixth in 19:44.80 to qualify as an individual. In the boys 5A Region IV meet, Dripping Springs’ girls team finished second to qualify for the UIL championsh­ips. LBJ boys runners Cameron Kleiman (15:43) and Dylan Cox (16:22) qualified as individual­s.

In Huntsville, the Cedar Park and Rouse girls teams finished first and second, respective­ly, to qualify for state. Georgetown’s Jazmin Hernandez also advanced, finishing third in the girls field in 19:17. On the boys side, the Cedar Park and Georgetown teams finished first and third, respective­ly, and Rouse’s Danny Madrid topped the field in 16:04.

TAPPS volleyball playoffs kick off: UIL volleyball teams don’t open postseason play until next week, but some TAPPS squads jumped into the postseason Tuesday night.

In a Class 3A first-round match, Hill Country Christian topped Beaumont Legacy Christian in four sets and advanced to face San Antonio Christian at Castle Hills next week. Round Rock Christian earned a first-round bye in the Class 3A bracket.

St. Michael’s has a first-round bye in Class 5A, but Hyde Park and Regents will play opening-round matches on Friday. The Panthers will travel to Frisco Legacy Christian, and the Knights will play at home against Dallas Christian.

In Class 4A, Brentwood Christian will play a first-round match against visiting Sugar Land Logos Prep on Tuesday. Texas School for the Deaf also will open play in the 4A bracket on Tuesday, when the Rangers will face Northland Christian.

Austin Waldorf qualified for the Class 2A bracket and will take on Baytown Christian on Friday.
