Bobcats rebound from 0-2 with four wins in past five games
Since starting the season 0-2, the Texas State men’s basketball team has won four of its past five games.
Last week, the Bobcats were 2-1 at the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase in Stock- ton, Calif. They opened with a victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff 71-54 and then lost to Canisius 68-62 before closing the tournament by beat- ing Pacific 85-78.
Sophomore guard Nijal Pearson was named to the all-tournament team after aver- aging 15.8 points per game and hitting 11 3-pointers in the three games. Pearson is averaging 14.9 points per game this season and shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc. As a team, the Bobcats are shooting 39 percent from 3-point range.
This week, the Bobcats topped A&M-Corpus Christi 66-53 thanks to a near triple-double — 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists — by junior forward Alex Pea- cock. It was Peacock’s first start at Texas State after he transferred from Iowa West- ern Community College. Peacock is averaging 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds.
The Bobcats will play at Houston Baptist on Saturday.
Women’s basketball: A two-game winning streak came to an end for Texas State when it fell to visiting Houston 72-67 Tuesday. Despite the loss, Taeler Deer and Toshua Leavitt continued their high-scoring seasons, with Deer putting up 18 points and Leavitt adding 13. Now 4-2, Texas State will play its third home game in a row Saturday, facing Prai- rie View A&M.
Football: Receiver August Pitre became Texas State’s 21st commitment for the incoming 2018 class when he pledged to the Bobcats last week.
A three-star recruit, according to 247Sports, the 6-foot1, 160-pound Pitre is out of Northwest High in Opelousas, La. He reportedly holds scholarship offers from Texas State, Navy, Southern and Jackson State. Pitre became the fourth receiver to pledge to the Bobcats.
