Bobcats looking to extend streak

The Texas State men’s basketball teamison a fourgame winning streak after beating Arkansas State 73-67 Thursday night.

After wins over Coastal Carolina (7-11, 1-4 in the Sun Belt) and South Alabama (9-8, 2-2) to start the streak, the Bobcats (117, 4-1) sneaked by with a 57-56 victory at home over Troy (7-10, 1-3) last Saturday. Texas State led for most of the game, extending

margin to as much as 11, but allowed Troy to get back in the game by not scoring a point for more than seven minutes late in the second half.

Junior forward Alex Peacock ended the drought by tipping in a missed shot with four seconds left to take back the lead and secure the win. He finished the game with nine points and four rebounds, three of which were offensive boards, including the winning play.

In the win Thursday against Arkansas State (6-12, 1-4), junior guard Tre’Larenz Nottingham had a career-high 17 points in just his second start at Texas State. He started in place of sophomore guard Marlin Davis, who is out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL, according to a report by the San Marcos Daily Record. Davis started 16 games this year before the injury, averaging 4.6 points and 3.5 assists.

The Bobcats are tied for second with Georgia Southern (13-5, 4-1) in the conference standings behind Louisiana-Lafayette (143, 4-0). Texas State will face both teams on the road this month.

This weekend the Bobcats are on the road to play Little Rock (5-13, 2-3) on Saturday.

Women’s basketball: The women’s team (11-5, 4-1) is on a winning streak as well, coming out victorious in its last three contests over South Alabama (10-5, 3-1), Troy (7-8, 2-2) and Arkansas State (8-8, 3-2).

Junior guard Toshua Leavitt hit 17 3-pointers in those three wins, including a 7-for-10 night against Troy. She leads the team in scoring and is second in the conference with 18.3 points per game, 22.4 in five Sun Belt games.

On the season, Leavitt has hit 73 3s for an average of 4.6 per game, which leads the Sun Belt by almost two shots (UL-Monroe guard Gabriella Cortez is at 2.7). She is also third inthe conference in 3-point percentage, making 43 percent of her attempts.

Senior guard Taeler Deer is the fourth-highest scorer in the Sun Belt, averaging 15.6 points per game. Deer has scored more than 20 points in four games, including the past two. She started out the season with 44-point performance against Texas Tech.

The Bobcats rank second in the Sun Belt at 71.9 points per game and are second in the standings behind Little Rock (8-8, 5-0). Texas State will have a chance to jump ahead Saturday when the teams meet in Arkansas.
