Most Central Texas districts will hold classes at their regular scheduled time Wednesday, but Austin was among the districts that decided to delay classes Wednesday morning.

The Austin, Del Valle, Eanes, Hays and Bastrop school districts announced they would start class two hours late on Wednesday. The Smithville school district remains closed.

The winter storm warning Tuesday afternoon was downgraded to a winter storm advisory. The city of Austin tweeted that “road conditions have generally improved,” but warned drivers to use caution as patches of ice could remain overnight.

For many of the Austin-area school districts that canceled school Tuesday because of bad weather, students will have to make up the day this spring. Many of them will decide in coming days which they’ll choose as their first makeup day.

But it’s possible that other districts, or schools within those districts, won’t need to makeup the days at all. Some, like Austin, have added enough additional minutes into the school year that they have the option to avoid a makeup day.

“A majority of Austin schools have enough minutes built into their schedule that a makeup day will not have to be utilized,” said Reyne Telles, district spokesman. “However, the district will review calendars to determine which schools, if any, need to modify campus schedules.”
