Receiver Zay Jones arrested after fight
Cops: Ex-Austinite, naked, broke glass at L.A. apartments.
Buffalo Bills receiver Zay Jones was arrested on a charge of felony vandalism after an incident at a Los Angeles apartment building Monday night.
TMZ Sports obtained footage of Jones involved in an altercation with his brother, Cayleb, a wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings.
In the video, Zay Jones, a 2013 graduate of Austin High School, can be heard saying he wants to “fight for Jesus,” while his brother repeatedly tells him to stop. Zay Jones, while naked, eventually breaks free from his brother’s hold and, according to TMZ, runs in the direction of an apartment belonging to Cayleb Jones’ girlfriend. What sounds like a woman’s voice can then be heard screaming in the video.
The Bills issued the following statement: “We are aware of the incident involving Zay Jones. We are still in the process of gathering more information on the matter. At this point, we will have no further comment.”
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesman told The Buffalo News that officers responded to the 900 block of S. Figueroa St., “where a male adult, later identified as Isaiah Jones, was breaking glass doors and windows at the locations.” When officers responded, they took Zay Jones into custody at 11:40 p.m. Monday.
Later in the video, footage shows blood splattered on the floors and wall. According to TMZ, Cayleb Jones, a 2012 graduate of Austin High, had to restrain Zay Jones from jumping out of a 30th-floor window. Photos from the scene show blood on the shattered window, and all over the floors and walls.
Zay Jones was released on bail Wednesday morning. His bail was set at $20,000. He is due back in court April 11. The charge is a felony because the amount of damage is alleged to be valued at more than $400.
A second-round draft pick in 2017, Zay Jones played in 15 games (10 starts), catching 27 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie. He had shoulder surgery after the season to repair a torn rotator cuff — an injury he played through for much of the year.
“As a rookie, to come in and really be thrust in the spotlight in terms of ... working at different positions, I thought Zay did a good job,” Bills coach Sean McDermott said last month at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Obviously he went through some highs and lows, much like some of our other rookies . ... The way Zay is wired I’m confident that he’ll learn from those situations. When you look at the shoulder injury he had that was flying under the radar for the most part, I think it really speaks to his toughness and his resiliency. I’m anxious to get him back here and have a second year that was better than his first. When you look around the league, a lot of times what you see is these guys have success and they at times relax. You can’t do that. You have to take that hungry approach and build on what you did and didn’t do your first year. I’m confident Zay will do that.”
