Burnet hurdler set for showdown

Ian Carter continues to make memories at Myers Stadium.

On Friday afternoon, the Burnet senior recorded the second-fastest time in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles, running the race in 14.38 seconds at the Texas Relays. That sets up an interesting final Saturday when he goes head-tohead with Wellington’s Luke Williams, who had the fastest qualifying time at 14.32.

Carter, bound for Texas State in the fall, claimed silver in last year’s Class 4A state track meet in the 110 hurdles with a 14.20. The field for the finals at 2:10 p.m. Saturday includes two other Central Texas athletes — Jamal January of St. Stephen’s Episcopal and Salado’s Holden Ford. January finished third in the prelims at 14.43, and Ford was eighth at 14.85.

Sister act: Stony Point senior Symone Washington qualified for Saturday’s finals in the girls 100 meters Division I race by finishing fourth in the prelims Friday.

Houston Cypress Ranch junior Kailei Collins was the top qualifier at 11.62. Washington was not far off the pace, crossing the line at 11.80.

Earlier Friday, Washington’s sister Sydney ran the anchor leg for Baylor in the 400-meter relay. Baylor finished sixth in the preliminaries and will compete in finals.

UT recruits perform: Some talented Texas recruits were in action Friday. Sophomore Shian Hyde helped New Mexico Junior College to eighth place in the women’s 400-meter relay prelims in 45.56 and will compete in Saturday’s final. LSU finished first (42.97) and Texas fourth (44.61).

Hyde, another in a pipeline of Longhorns recruits from Jamaica, was an NJCAA All-American in the 100 and 200 meters and 400 relay.

Another UT recruit, Tolar’s Warren Miller, competed in the boys’ pole vault and won the Section B prelims at 16 feet, 2 inches to advance to Saturday’s final. Miller was the Class 3A champion and ranked No. 7 in the U.S. in 2017. A third recruit, Cedar Ridge middle distance runner Sean Prendeville, was scheduled for the 1,600 meters later Friday.

Carter shines again: With an 11.42 sprint in a qualifying run for the Division I 100-meter dash, Dallas Carter senior Sha’Carri Richardson blew past her competition. Richardson’s run was wind-aided, so she did not knock Navasota’s Monique Lee (11.81 in 2003) out of the meet’s small-school record books. (In 1988, South Oak Cliff ’s Chryste Gaines set the Division II record of 11.50.)

Still, Richardson posted the best qualifying time of any girl in the Division I or II competition. The LSU-bound runner would have also beaten 16 boys on Friday.

DeSoto relay soars: DeSoto’s highly touted girls track team, winner of two consecutive UIL state Class 6A titles, advanced to Saturday’s Division II 800-meter relay final with a time of 1:37.21. Freshman JaEra Griffin, who ran anchor, also advanced to the girls 100 final.

A personal best: Although she finished eighth in the girls 100-meter hurdles, McNeil senior Faith Tormusa-Koroma was all smiles after finishing with a personal-best time of 14.9. The winner of the race was DeSoto’s Antoinette Bradley, who finished in 14.24.
