Three HRs key to 9-3 road win

- From wire services

A trio of home runs, including a grand slam by Kody Clemens, helped lift Texas to a 9-3 win over the host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Tuesday night.

Clemens went 1 for 4 and gave the Longhorns (19-12) a nine-run lead when he cleared the bases with his eighth home run of the season in the sixth inning.

Blair Henley got the start for Texas, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three in three innings.

A solo home run by Masen Hibbeler got the Longhorns on the scoreboard in the first inning. Michael McCann had the other home run for Texas, the first of his career, that came in the fourth.

David Hamilton went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Islanders (16-14) scored their three runs in the ninth.

Softball: A three-run home run by Kelli Montgomery was all the offense Houston needed to defeat Texas 3-1 in Houston on Tuesday night.

The Longhorns (19-14) managed four hits in their first loss since March 18. Their seven-game winning streak ended, but their six-game Big 12 winning streak remains intact.

Savannah Heebner (15-4) had an outstanding night in the circle for Houston, allowing just one run on four hits. She struck out four and walked one.

Brooke Bolinger (8-5) took the loss, allowing Montgomery’s key home run in the first inning and five hits over four innings of work. Bolinger struck out six and walked two in four innings.

Arielle James had the Cougars’ only other extra-base hit, a double in the first inning. She also stole a base.

MK Tedder got Texas on the scoreboard in the first inning, hitting a ground out that scored Janae Jefferson. Jefferson got on base with a bunt single. Paige von Sprecken, Taylor Ellsworth and Kaitlyn Washington had the other hits for Texas.

After the four runs combined in the first inning, both pitchers settled down and didn’t allow any more runs. Kristen Clark came on in relief for Texas and gave up two hits in two innings but kept Houston from scoring.

Women’s golf: Freshman Kaitlyn Papp, a 2017 Lake Travis High graduate, was selected as the Big 12 golfer of the month, the conference announced Tuesday.

Papp claimed her second individual tournament win at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational with a three-round total 213 (3-under par). She finished fourth at the Wildcat Invitational with a 210 (6-under par). She also had 12 birdies at the Thompson Invitational.
