Beloved Texas winery Messina Hof now has canned wine, including rosé

Canned wine — a relatively new packaging method for wine that has made it more accessible than ever — is likely here to stay after a few years of skyrocketing sales.

And so is rosé. That almost goes without saying, given that growth in sales of the wine in the U.S. last year outpaced the growth of over all wine sales.

So Messina Hof, one of Texas’ oldest wineries, has found a winning combination with the debut of its new canned wine lineup featuring a dry rosé. Messina Hof ’s popular sweet red, Beau, is the other canned offering you’ll soon start seeing on retailers’ shelves throughout the state.

The 40-year-old winery, which has three locations in Texas, is selling the two wines in four-packs to provide a more mobile-friendly way to drink its products, according to a news release. And the two wines now in cans — especially the rosé, made with 100 percent Texas grenache grapes — are particularly suited for the casual outdoor drinking occasions we’ll want them for, from backyard barbecues to camping trips.

Messina Hof ’s new packaging “allows our customers to bring our wine on every adventure life takes them,” Messina Hof owner and winemaker Paul M. Bonarrigo said in the release.

He also noted that Messina Hof was one of the first Texas wineries to introduce wine on tap, another trend that has bolstered wine sales nationally.

Wine lovers can purchase the cans at each of the three Messina Hof locations — nearby in Fredericksburg, as well as in Grapevine just outside Dallas and in Bryan, where the estate vineyard is located. They’re also available on the Messina Hof website and at a few retailers, though that list of stores will grow.

The cans arrive on the heels of a banner 40th year for the winery, which won big at several international competitions: a double gold medal and two gold medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, a gold medal at TEXSOM International Wine Awards 2018 and a gold medal at AWC Vienna 2017.
