UT golfer Ghim named All-Big 12 for a fourth year

A day after being named a semifinali­st for the Jack Nicklaus Award, Texas senior golfer Doug Ghim was named a member of the All-Big 12 team for the fourth year in a row, the conference announced Wednesday.

Ghim won two events this season and his stroke average of 70.04 leads Texas. He’s finished in the top 8 six times.

Ghim previously earned a spot on the all-freshman team in his first year at Texas. Last year he earned the title of Big 12 player of the year. Fredrick Nilehn of Texas Tech won the honor this season.

Since conference awards have been given out, Ghim is the seventh in UT history to be named to the all-conference team all four years. Jason Hartwick was the last Longhorn to earn the achievemen­t from 200004. Brad Elder, Justin Leonard, Jean-Paul Hebert, Bob Estes and Mark Brooks are the other golfers to achieve the feat.

Women’s tennis: Sophomore twin sisters Bianca and Anna Turati were named to the singles draw of the NCAA Championsh­ips, announced Wednesday.

The 64-player competitio­n will begin May 23 at Wake Forest. First-round matchups will be released later this month.

Bianca Turati is the topranked player in the ITA national singles rankings and hasn’t lost since Feb. 11. Anna Turati is ranked 29th and is riding a 12-match winning streak. It’s the first time she’s earned a berth to the NCAA Championsh­ips.

Petra Granic, another UT sophomore, is the sixth alternate for the singles draw. She’s won 15 straight matches and is ranked 72nd.

Men’s tennis: The Texas men earned a singles and a doubles berth for the NCAA Championsh­ips, announced Wednesday.

Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles, both juniors, were selected for the 32-team doubles draw. Yuya Ito earned a berth for the 64-player singles competitio­n.

The tournament starts May 23 at Wake Forest.

It’s the second year in a row that Ito has qualified for the tournament. He’s 16-7 in singles action this year.

The Texas duo of Banzer and Telles is ranked 10th in the ITA doubles rankings. They are 20-11 overall this season.
