An RBI single by Randel Leahy ended the second game as the Texas softball team completed a sweep of Incarnate Word at McCombs Field on Wednesday night.

Leahy’s RBI made it a runrule, 8-0 victory in six innings after Texas (30-21) won the first game 5-2.

The doubleheader sweep halted a three-game losing streak for the Longhorns. They had gone 2-6 in their previous eight games.

A five-run fourth inning powered UT to the win in the nightcap.

Five Longhorns doubled in the second game. Janae Jefferson went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Ki’Audra Hayter went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. Paige von Sprecken doubled and drove in a run. Tuesday DerMargosian went 1-for-1 with a run scored, a double and an RBI. Taylor Ellsworth also had a double and an RBI.

Brooke Bolinger, Chloe Romero and Kristen Clark combined to allow just three hits by the Cardinals (14-32). Bolinger earned the win as she allowed one hit in four innings.

Earlier in the day, an RBI single in the first gave Incarnate Word the lead against starter Erica Wright. But a sacrifice fly by von Sprecken scored Jefferson to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

The teams traded runs in the second inning as well before Texas gained the advantage.

Hayter put the Longhorns up by two runs in the second when she singled to score Kaitlyn Slack and Kaitlyn Washington.

An error in the outfield allowed Hayter to score later in the inning.

Wright picked up the win after allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. She struck out eight. Von Sprecken earned the save with two innings of one-hit relief, striking out three.

The Longhorns next have a two-game set at Baylor beginning at 6:30 p.m. today.

Golf: Freshman Kaitlyn Papp earned a spot on the U.S. team for the Arnold Palmer Cup, it was announced Friday.

The competition will take place July 6-8 at Evian Resort Golf Club in France. An expanded format will debut at the Arnold Palmer Cup, with U.S. collegiate men and women facing international golfers.

Papp was selected via coach’s pick to join Longhorns teammate Sophia Schubert. Schubert was selected based on her Arnold Palmer Cup ranking.

Papp is the first UT golfer to earn the titles of Big 12 player of the year and freshman of the year. She has a stroke average of 71.74, second on the team behind Schubert.

Three Texas golfers are in contention for national awards, it was announced Thursday.

The Golf Coaches Association of America named Doug Ghim one of three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award. He’s the third Longhorn to be a finalist since 2012. Jordan Spieth (2012) and Beau Hossler (2016) were also finalists for Texas.

Papp and Schubert are on the Annika Award watch list, also announced Thursday. The winner of the award is selected by a panel of collegiate golfers, coaches and members of the golf media. Schubert is No. 6 and Papp is No. 16 in the latest Golfstat rankings.
