Campbell’s RBI single stands up for New Orleans

Eric Campbell hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to lead the New Orleans Baby Cakes to a 3-2 win over the Round Rock Express in the Pacific Coast League series opener Thursday night in Metairie, La.

Campbell also scored and went 2 for 4.

Isaac Galloway scored on Campbell’s second hit to give the Baby Cakes the one-run lead in the eighth.

Round Rock had tied it at 2 in the seventh when Christian Lopes hit a solo home run.

The Baby Cakes went up 2-1 after Campbell scored on a single by Tomas Telis in the sixth.

New Orleans starter Sandy Alcantara (2-1) got the win, and Tim Lincecum (1-1) took the loss in relief. Jumbo Diaz retired the side in order in the ninth for his sixth save of the season.

Alcantara gave up two runs, both solo homers, on five hits through eight innings. Lincecum surrendere­d one run on two hits in two innings.

Yovani Gallardo got the start for Round Rock, allowing two runs on five hits in 5⅓ innings. He left the game after surrenderi­ng a double to Campbell in the sixth.

Nick Noonan hit a solo home run for the Express in the sixth to tie it at 1.

With the win, New Orleans improved to 6-3 against Round Rock this season. The Express had won four of five before dropping Thursday’s game.
