Events this week include ‘Jaws’ movie party, July 4 celebration
Coming up
“Jaws” Movie Party. Too terrified to watch an elusive giant shark terrorize islanders while you’re marooned in Lake Travis on inner tubes, as part of the Alamo Drafthouse’s “Jaws” on the Water event this summer? The Alamo is offering a less scary alternative where you can feel safe in the theater seats. But it’s still going to be fun. This interactive movie party lets you live the shark-hunting adventure along with Brody, Hooper and Quint — minus the salty sea air and actual mortal peril, of course. The party will have props and surprises. 1 p.m. Sunday. $12. Alamo Ritz, 320 E. Sixth St. drafthouse.com.
Hill Country Galleria’s July 4 Celebration. Commemorate America’s freedom at Hill Country Galleria’s annual Independence Day celebration, full of familyfriendly activities. The event includes backyard games, live music by local bands Edison Chair and Vallejo, face painting and more for the kids, an all-day sidewalk sale presented by Hill Country Galleria retailers and more. The backyard games, hosted by Camp Gladiator, include a threelegged race, potato sack race, obstacle course, tug of war and more. 4 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Free. 12700 Hill Country Blvd. hillcountrygalleria.com.
JR Brow at Cap City Comedy Club. Brow is a former Funniest Person in Austin winner and one of the original Austin comics on the scene for the past 30 years. He cut his teeth opening for legends like Bill Hicks and Steven Wright and is what my father would refer to as a “comic’s comic.” He absolutely works harder than anyone in the room. Armed with jokes, music and the solid timing of a touring comic, JR Brow is an Austin original who should not be missed live. 8 p.m. July 5, 7:30 and 10 p.m. July 6-7. $14-$23. 8120 Research Blvd. 512-467-2333, capcitycomedy.com.
