POLICE SHOOTINGS AND MENTAL HEALTH

-

From 2010 through 2016, eight people killed by Austin police had confirmed mental health issues:

Patrick Allen Faith died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sept. 25, 2010, after leading police on a 45-minute chase in which he was shot in the shoulder. Police said the incident stemmed from a confrontation between Faith and his girlfriend in which Faith fired random shots from a handgun inside an East Austin home.

Larry McQuilliams was killed after he fired more than 200 rounds at government buildings in downtown Austin on Nov. 8, 2014.

Tyler Caraway, a 24-year-old suspect in a 2014 bank robbery, shot at officers before he was gunned down, police said.

Michael Holt was killed July 5, 2015, after he killed a man outside of the Omni Hotel in downtown Austin, then traded fire with police.

Richard Munroe called police early on July 5, 2015, and told them he was suicidal. Police traced the call to a North Austin home where they found Munroe with a gun into his waistband. Officers tried to use a stun gun on Munroe, but it was ineffective. Police said he went inside his home, then came back out and reached for his weapon. Three officers opened fire. Investigators later learned Munroe was holding a BB gun.

Cassandra Bolin died when an Austin police SWAT sniper shot her during a standoff in North Austin on May 25, 2015. Bolin’s boyfriend called police and told them she was suicidal. Officers negotiated with her for three hours, at one point firing nonlethal projectiles. Later, she came out of her apartment pointing a gun at herself, then at officers.

David Joseph, 17, was naked and unarmed when he was fatally shot on Feb. 8, 2016. People who knew Joseph told investigators he’d been acting strangely before the shooting. His death sparked widespread outrage.

Micah Jester died in October 2016 after she ran at officers while holding a BB gun. A man had called police to report that Jester needed mental health assistance and “vacillated as to whether she was armed with a weapon” before the shooting, the Travis County district attorney’s office said.
