A woman who was hit by a truck and critically injured in a South Austin Walmart parking lot earlier this year is suing a former Austin school resource officer who is being investigated in connection with the incident.

Michele Gonzales sustained serious injuries when she was struck around 2 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Walmart in the 700 block of East Ben White Boulevard.

The driver fled, prompting authorities to release grisly video footage of the hit-and-run to find the person responsible.

Adam Marsh, 33, a former Austin school district police resource officer, was identified as the owner of the vehicle, according to a search warrant for his vehicle. The warrant says a sergeant who works with Marsh at the school district called authorities to report him, saying that Marsh’s truck looked like the one in the video.

Gonzales is suing Marsh for more than $1 million. A petition filed July 11 in Travis County state district court accuses Marsh of being negligent when he hit Gonzales with his truck.

The suit says Gonzales was clearly visible when Marsh hit her as he was pulling away from a gas pump. She “crumpled to the ground from the force of the collision” before he drove over her, “crushing her under the weight of his truck,” the suit says.

Gonzales was hospitalized with critical injuries after the crash, according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services. Her family said on a GoFundMe page that she was unable to breathe on her own while in the intensive care unit. She is continuing to recover, the GoFundMe page says.
