Texas football legend Colt McCoy signed a one-year extension with the Washington Redskins, probably keeping the quarterback with the team through 2019.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network and NFL.com reported the signing Thursday on Twitter.

The deal is worth up to $7 million and is one that might allow McCoy to leave for a better job elsewhere after the 2018 season.

Washington added Alex Smith to be its starter, opting not to elevate McCoy to the role when Kirk Cousins left for Minnesota. Should McCoy find his way onto the field this season and perform well, he could void the contract and look for a better situation.

McCoy becomes one of the highest-paid backups in the league as a result of the deal. The highest-paid backup is Super Bowl LII champion Nick Foles of the Philadelphia Eagles, a former Westlake High School star. He has a $13.6 million salary.

The former Longhorn hasn’t had many great moments in the NFL, carrying a 7-18 career record. He has 5,586 passing yards and 26 touchdowns and hasn’t attempted a pass in two seasons.

McCoy was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round and started eight games in the 2010 season. He started 13 games the next year and went 4-9 with a career-best 14 touchdown passes.

At Texas McCoy went 45-8, earning the most wins in NCAA history at the time. He holds the record for highest completion percentage in a season (76.7 in 2008) in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Walter Camp watch list: UT wide receiver Collin Johnson was among 50 college football players named to a watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award Friday.

The award is given annually to the player judged to be the best by the Walter Camp Foundation. Previous honorees include Texas legends Ricky Williams (1998) and McCoy (2008, 2009).

Johnson, who will be a junior this fall, is also on the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top wide receiver. He led the Longhorns in receiving yards (765) and receptions (54) and finished second in receiving touchdowns, with two, in 2017.

La Grange native J.K. Dobbins, a sophomore at Ohio State, is also on the watch list. He broke Ohio State’s freshman rushing record with 1,403 yards last season.

The winner will be announced Dec. 6.
