For one game, Patmon makes blitzing a habit
Former Vista Ridge standout offers Jaguars some versatility in secondary.
On second down, he came close. On third down, he made the play. And on fourth down, the Jaguars’ defense got off the field.
Determined to find out which nickel cornerbacks can disrupt opposing quarterbacks, defensive coordinator Todd Wash dialed up back-to-backto-back blitzes for Tyler Patmon during the preseason opener this past weekend. The result: two sacks (one by Patmon) and a turnover on downs.
“I think Wash ended up sending me on like six blitzes,” Patmon said. “It was good to get out there and at least attempt to blitz. It felt good just to practice those reps live in a game situation.”
The former Vista Ridge star is behind D.J. Hayden at the nickel spot on the depth chart, but he offers important versatility to the Jaguars’ defense. The 27-year-old provides depth behind cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye and is comfortable
Recruiting currently sits in a dead period that doesn’t allow on-campus visits by players to colleges or by coaches to high school campuses. It exists to give recruits an opportunity to focus on the preseason and their respective high school teams. It also gives the college coaches a chance to pour time into preparing for Week 1.
The Longhorns are done at quarterback, tight end and likely at cornerback. Needs remain at wide receiver, both lines, inside linebacker and at safety.

The 2019 class includes four-star outside linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd (Calif.) and three-star outside linebacker Marcus Tillman Jr. (Fla.). It’s clear that the Longhorns covet an inside linebacker prospect in the 2019 cycle and Katy Cinco Ranch product David Gbenda emerged as the top remaining target as the summer window closed and the last dead period before the season began.
