AUSTIN360 BOOK CLUB REVEALS THIS MONTH’S SELECTION

Ast month, we announced the launch of the Austin360 Book Club, an online community for readers and book lovers.

-

LStarting on Sept. 1, we’ll read our first book: “Educated” by Tara Westover. The book is a memoir of a woman who grew up in a family of Idaho survivalists who didn’t believe in traditional education, medicine and other facets of American life. Westover didn’t have a birth certificate until she was 9 years old and didn’t receive any formal education until she applied to Brigham Young University as a teenager. She earned a degree from BYU, then continued her education at Cambridge University and Harvard University.

We chose “Educated” as the first book for the Austin360 Book Club for a variety of reasons: It’s a New York Times best-seller and has received countless great reviews, and with September bringing the start of a new school year, the theme of education and school was at the front of our minds. We want to hear your school stories: Who was your favorite teacher, and why? Send your stories to giveaways@statesman.com and we’ll randomly choose winners to receive a copy of “Educated” (you must be able to pick up the book from the Austin AmericanStatesman building on South Congress Avenue).

Want to join the Austin360 Book Club? Request to join the group by searching “Austin360 Book Club” on Facebook.

We’ll host a discussion about “Educated” on Facebook Live on Sept. 27, when we’ll also announce our October book. And stay tuned for announcements and updates on the Texas Book Festival in October.
