Man shot by Austin police is charged

A man who was wounded by Austin police on Sunday has been tied to a series of carjackings and holdups over the past week.

Glenn Austin Miles, 51, was charged with aggravated robbery and booked Sunday night, according to Travis County Jail records.

Police believe Miles was behind a slew of incidents in North Austin from Sept. 4 through Sept. 8 that included at least two store robberies and three carjackings, according to an arrest affidavit filed against him on Monday.

Officers received reports of a robbery at the Monarch Food Store, 1402 E. 38th ½ St., around 10:46 p.m. Sept. 4, according to the affidavit. A man walked into the store, grabbed a sixpack of Modelo beer and put it on the store’s counter, the affidavit said. He then walked around the counter and pulled a silver gun from his waistband.

The man pointed the gun at an employee and forced him to open the register, then took off

with a haul of cash, the document said.

Investigators pulled security footage from the store that caught a silver Toyota 4Runner pulling onto a side street near the store just before the robbery.

The robber walked to the store from the street where the 4Runner was seen, and then went back to the same street after the incident.

Police thought the vehicle may have been involved, so they began looking for it in the area.

Police also received reports of carjackings with a suspect who matched the description of the robber. Detectives worked out that the man was stealing cars to use in robberies, then ditching them before returning to his own vehicle.

Investigators began focusing on the areas surrounding the carjackings and eventually spotted the 4Runner they had been searching for at the Austin Suites Hotel in the 8300 block of North Interstate 35. Officers identified Miles as the driver and followed the vehicle to the Austin Suites.

Police Chief Brian Manley said two officers fired at Miles after he drew a gun from his waistband, but they also then immediately performed CPR on Miles until Austin-Travis County EMS medics arrived.

Miles was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The officers were not identified, but Manley said one was a sergeant with 21 years on the force and the other was a patrol officer with six years of service.

Miles has been charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. His bail has been set at $100,000, jail records show. His booking photo was unavailable pending his release from the hospital.

The shooting happened at the same hotel where a woman was shot in the face Sept. 1.

In that incident, police were called to the Austin Suites Hotel around 7 a.m. for a report of shots being fired in the area. When they arrived, they found they found the injured woman, who was taken to an area hospital where she was expected to recover.

Police said they believed she knew the person who shot her.

The shooting on Sunday marked the ninth Austin police shooting in 2018.
