POLICE IDENTIFY OFFICERS WHO SHOT SUSPECT ON SUNDAY
Two Austin police officers who opened fire on a man suspected in a series of robberies have been identified as officer James Eichenholz and Sgt. Gregory White.
The officers shot and wounded Glenn Austin Miles, 51, in the 8300 block of Inter- state 35 North on Sunday after he pulled a handgun on them, police said.
Court documents filed earlier this week said Miles was suspected in several armed robberies and carjackings in the days leading up to the shooting.
Investigators think Miles used vehicles he stole during carjackings to commit robber- ies in other areas, an arrest affidavit filed against Miles said.
Detectives used surveillance video and witness reports to track Miles’ vehicle to the Austin Suites Hotel on Sunday night.
When the off i cers approached Miles, he drew a gun from his waistband, prompting the officers to fire, police said.
Both officers immediately performed CPR on Miles until Austin-Travis County EMS medics arrived and took him to a hospital, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said.
Miles has sin c e been charged with aggravated robbery, according to Travis County Jail records. His bail has been set at $100,000, jail records show.
Eichenholz has served with Austin police for six years, while White has been with the department for 21 years.
Both are currently assigned to the Austin police Violent Crimes Task Force, but remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of concurrent criminal and internal investigations.
Sunday’s incident marked the ninth Austin police shooting in 2018. Last year, eight police shootings involved on-duty officers; a ninth involved an off-duty officer who was driving in Burnet County.
Since 2008, Austin police have twice recorded nine shootings by on-duty officers in a calendar year: in 2013 and 2016.
