Workplace benefits firm to cut 81 jobs in Austin

The Boon Group, which creates employee benefits packages for government contractors, is eliminating 81 jobs in Austin, according to documents filed with the state.

The Austin-based company said it previously entered into a co-employment agreement and “has determined that to increase efficiency these employees will be rebadged under our partner employer.”

The company made the announcement in a WARN letter sent to the Texas Workforce Commission.

A WARN letter, which stands for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, is a federally mandated notice employers must provide to state governments in the event of major layoffs.

In the Boon Group’s letter, Jessica Nelson, listed as people and culture generalist for the company, said the layoff is expected to occur Nov. 4.

The company has a total of 213 full-time employees, the letter said.

The specific jobs being eliminated were redacted in the letter the Texas Workforce Commission released.

The company did not immediately respond to an American-Statesman message seeking comment.

The employees whose jobs are being eliminated don’t have bumping rights, which refers to the right to replace less-senior workers instead of losing their jobs.

The Boon Group said it would offer transition programs to affected employees.

“These employees are being rebadged under our partner company, we do not anticipate any negative affect on the employees or the community,” the letter said.

Founded in 1982, the Boon Group says it offers a range of fringe benefit packages that can be tailored to meet government contracts.
