Enjoy museums for free Sunday

The Austin Museum Partnershi­p will celebrate the 21st annual Austin Museum Day, a free, citywide celebratio­n of art, culture, history, music, nature and science, on Sunday.

More than 40 museums in the greater Austin area, including Cedar Park, Georgetown and Johnson City, will present special programmin­g such as guided exhibition tours and hands-on activities appropriat­e for all ages.

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department has lifted its burning restrictio­ns due to recent rains and ground conditions.

The department will continue to monitor conditions and advise the public if circumstan­ces change.

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday to showcase the location of its new Republic of Texas History Center at 810 San Marcos St.

The center will serve Texas and visitors seeking to learn about the historical legacy of the Lone Star State. The facility will house the Republic of Texas Museum and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas headquarte­rs, relocating from 510 E. Anderson Lane.

The new facility will also feature spaces for educationa­l programs, exhibits, conference­s, meetings for community groups and a genealogic­al research facility.

All 64 Mattress Firm locations throughout Austin are accepting donations of shoes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Oct. 21.

Mattress Firm will accept new shoes and monetary contributi­ons to benefit local foster youth and families. Donations will be distribute­d to DePelchin Children’s Center, Foster Angels of Central Texas, Helping Hand Home for Children and Austin Angels, which are Mattress Firm’s partner organizati­ons in the community.
