Titans unsure of QB; Falcons’ Freeman out

-

The Tennessee Titans still don’t know who will start at quarterback Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Marcus Mariota was limited all week with an arm injury and is questionable for the second straight game. Blaine Gabbert started in place of Mariota in Tennessee’s 20-17 victory over the Houston Texans.

“I would say it’s pretty much the same as it was yesterday,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said Friday. “It’s probably going to take the next 24 hours to make a decision, but it’s pretty much the same as it’s been since Wednesday with a little bit of improvement from last week.”

The Titans will have left tackle Taylor Lewan back Sunday now that he’s been cleared from the league’s concussion protocol. Offensive tackle Jack Conklin was upgraded to questionable for the first time this year as he recovers from surgery to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Falcons: Running back Devonta Freeman will miss his second straight game with a knee injury, and the Falcons also will be without starting defensive end Takk McKinley when they host the Saints on Sunday. Freeman went down with a bruised knee in a Week 1 loss to Philadelphia, while McKinley sustained a groin injury in the closing stages of last weekend’s victory over Carolina.

Eagles: Won’t have running backs Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis, and backup Corey Clement is questionable. Ajayi missed practice all week because of a back injury suffered in last week’s loss at Tampa Bay. Sproles already missed one game with a hamstring injury. Clement appeared on the injury report for the first time Friday with a quadriceps injury.

Bills: Running back LeSean McCoy is listed as questionable due to a rib cartilage injury for Buffalo’s game at Minnesota. McCoy has practiced on a limited basis since being hurt in a loss to the Chargers last weekend. Backup running back Taiwan Jones is also listed as questionable due to a deep cut on his forehead.

Cowboys: Defensive tackle Maliek Collins has been ruled out of Sunday’s game at Seattle with a knee injury and pass rusher Randy Gregory is set to return after missing a week with a concussion.

Panthers: Placed starting safety Da’Norris Searcy on injured reserve following his second concussion in five weeks. Rookie Rashaan Gaulden and veteran Colin Jones are expected to split snaps at safety against Cincinnati.

Vikings: Safety Andrew Sendejo was fined $53,482 by the NFL for his third-quarter hit on Packers wide receiver Davante Adams during Minnesota’s tie at Green Bay last weekend. Sendejo was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness.

Late Thursday

(At) Browns 21, Jets 17: The beer-fueled bash spilled into the streets around FirstEnergy Stadium as delirious Browns chanted for their new hero, the streak buster.

“Ba-ker May-field,” they screamed.

They’ve named their new starting quarterback. Coach Hue Jackson isn’t quite there yet.

Jackson said he isn’t ready to “officially” identify his starter for next week’s game in Oakland, but all signs point to Mayfield taking over in Cleveland following his dazzling NFL debut.

The No. 1 pick in this year’s draft replaced concussed starter Tyrod Taylor late in the first half and led the Browns (1-1-1) on four scoring drives as they erased a two-touchdown deficit to beat New York (1-2) and end Cleveland’s 19-game winless streak — the NFL’s second longest since 1970.
