BASEBALL 2 more Terps pitchers picked in MLB draft

A day after the Boston Red Sox selected Maryland right-hander Mike Shawaryn in the fifth round with the 148th overall pick, two more Terps pitchers were selected Saturday in the Major League Baseball draft. The San Francisco Giants selected junior right-hander Mike Rescigno in the 25th round with the 755th overall pick, and the Arizona Diamondbac­ks took senior left-hander Rob Galligan in the 36th round with the 1,079th overall pick. Rescigno, a converted infielder, had a 2.25 ERA with four strikeouts in four innings in 2015 and finished this season 2-1 with 23 strikeouts, 11 walks and a 5.59 ERA in 191⁄3 innings. Galligan was 0-3 with 13 strikeouts, 17 walks and a 3.09 ERA in 231⁄3 innings in 2016 after posting a 2.74 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 621⁄3 innings, including four starts, in 2015.

Minnesota tied the WNBA record for most victories to start a season as Washington lost its seventh consecutiv­e home game. WOMEN’S ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS: Emma Bentov-Lagman, Cristin Connerney and Lilianna Dyer of 1st Class Gymnastics in Annapolis claimed first place in the senior dynamic routine, the second of three events, at the USA Gymnastics Championsh­ips in Providence, R.I., with a score of 27.187. Baltimore Boxing’s Clayton Frazier meets Elvis Banegas in a rematch. Tyrell Boyd, Justin “Psycho” Sykes, Ashton “The Goon” Sykes, Destiny Day Owens, Allen “The Hampden Hammer” Burris and Tommy Coe Jr. will appear in bouts against opponents to be named. MAJOR LEAGUE LACROSSE: The inaugural Legends Alumni Game will be held Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. at the Lake Placid Summit Classic in Lake Placid, N.Y. Teams will comprise about 40 former MLL players and coaches. Former players include Gary Gait (Baltimore Bayhawks), Tim Goettelman­n (Loyola Maryland) and Josh Sims (Baltimore Bayhawks, Severn). GOLF: Baltimore Municipal Golf Corp. will host the fifth annual Baltimore Putting Championsh­ip benefiting the Baltimore’s Classic Five Junior Golf program. Golfers will compete in two divisions — adult (age 18 and older) and junior (17 and under).
