John H. Hargrave, a former Baltimore restaurateur and world traveler, was killed Tuesday in an auto accident in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 50. Family members said Mr. Hargrave was turning onto a highway when his car was hit by a truck.

“He was killed instantly,” said his brother, Robert Lindsay Hargrave of Timonium.

The son of Louis Whaley Hargrave, a Bank of America trust officer, and Sandra Hanson Hargrave, a real estate professional, John Hanson Hargrave was born in Baltimore and raised in Ruxton.

After graduating in 1984 from Boys’ Latin School, he received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland, College Park.

During the 1990s, Mr. Hargrave began working in the financial industry in Baltimore and later moved to New York City when he joined Paine Webber.

While working in New York, Mr. Hargrave developed a passion for the varied cuisines found in the city, family members said.

He married the former Janice Coffey in 2001 and the couple moved to Baltimore, where they opened the Sky Lounge Tango Tapas Restaurant and Bar in Federal Hill.

Several years later, they moved to Fort Worth, where Mr. Hargrave worked in the financial industry.

At the time of his death, he and his wife were planning to open another restaurant.

Mr. Hargrave enjoyed world travel, beaches and music festivals.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles St.

In addition to his wife and brother, Mr. Hargrave is survived by a son, Dylan Hargrave, 7; two daughters, Lily Hargrave, 9, and Ashley Hargrave, 4; and his parents, who live in Ruxton.
