Baltimore police officers injured in auto accident

Two Baltimore police officers were injured when their department cruiser was involved in an accident Saturday evening at the intersection of Forest Park Avenue and Windsor Mill Road, according to the Baltimore Police Department. Police said the officers were riding together in a marked patrol car at about 6:11 p.m. when a collision involving multiple vehicles caused a civilian’s car to strike the patrol car, police said. The officers were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment. Their injuries are not life-threatening, police said. Police said since the accident occurred near the border between the city and Baltimore County, the Baltimore County police CRASH Team will investigate.

Man, 34, shot Saturday in Charles North

A man was shot in Charles North at mid-morning Saturday, Baltimore police said. About 10:39 a.m., police found a 34-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds in the first block of W. 20th St. in the Station North arts district. The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said. No other information was immediately available. The incident happened in an up-and-coming neighborhood near popular bookstore and eatery Red Emma’s and the Joe Squared pizza shop. Employees at Red Emma’s, where customers crowded the tables a few hours after the incident, declined to discuss the shooting. Wren Taube, a server at Joe Squared, said he was preparing the restaurant for opening when he heard three or four gunshots. He looked out the door and people were running down the street. “Just as fast as they were running, they stopped and everything was back to normal again,” Taube said. His co-worker David Smith said he wasn’t totally surprised by the shooting because people congregate at corners in the area. “Something was bound to happen,” he said. “It is unfortunate.” Jia Aziz, who works in the nearby Mini Mart ringing up customers from behind bulletproof glass, said customers were talking about the shooting all morning, but she didn’t hear the shots. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact citywide shooting detectives, 410-396-2221, or the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line, 1-866-7LOCKUP. One man was killed, another injured in a shooting at a West Baltimore home where police found illegal drugs and distribution materials early Saturday, the department said. Police said Eboni Thornton, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene and a 34-year-old man was taken to an area hospital for treatment after a shooting inside a home in the 300 block of Carrollton Ave. Police were called to the Poppleton home about 1:46 a.m. Inside the home, officers said, they found illegal narcotics as well as paraphernalia used to package the drugs for distribution. Police said the victims were targeted and suspects forced their way inside to shoot them. The suspects then fled in an unknown direction. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1866-7LOCKUP.

Fake ‘mayday’ calls cost Coast Guard $500K

The U.S. Coast Guard is seeking the public’s help in finding a man who has broadcast false “mayday” distress calls over marine radio for two years. The man has made 28 such calls since July 2014 from an area around West Street near Route 2 in Annapolis, the Coast Guard said. The latest calls came at 10:27 p.m. Thursday and 1:08 a.m. Friday. So far, the calls have cost the Coast Guard an estimated $500,000. Each mayday triggers an automatic search. “A hoax call is a deadly and serious offense,” said Lt. Cmdr. Sara Wallace, chief of response for the Maryland-National Capital Region. Anyone who has information that could help identify the caller is asked to contact the Coast Guard at 410-576-2525 or the Coast Guard Investigative Service in Baltimore via email at cgis-baltimore@uscg.mil.
